Overview

Program Topic: Harbor Seal Adaptations and Life in a Marine Protected Area

General Description: Take a dive into the world of the Harbor seal at MacKerricher State Park! Students will explore the similarities and differences between humans and these astounding marine mammals. Through observation, and an “adaptation costume”, students will identify what crucial adaptations of the Harbor seal ensure their survival in the cold Pacific waters of northern California. While we discuss the life of a Harbor seal, we will take a live look at the MacKerricher State Park Marine Protected Area and learn how this MPA ensures the health and safety of these marvelous marine mammals. We wrap up our time together with a short interactive skit to help us practice protecting our MPA and the wildlife that calls MacKerricher home.
