Overview

Program Topic: Dive into Northern California's Marine Protected Areas with North Coast State Parks

General Description: Dive into California’s northernmost Marine Protected Areas to discover how the ocean is more than meets the eye. Whether we are uncovering the mysteries of the deep sea, investigating the crashing waves on sandy beaches, or sifting through submerged eelgrass forests, California’s MPAs are living classrooms waiting to be explored. Students will be introduced to (sometimes bizarre) ocean creatures through learning about their dynamic habitats while we discuss why it is vital to protect and preserve the watery world.

Academic Content Standard Subject Area: Science/STEM

Next Generation Science Standards – NGSS:

Communicate solutions that will reduce the impact of humans on the land, water, air, and/or other living things in the local environment.*
Apply scientific principles to design a method for monitoring and minimizing a human impact on the environment.*

Use evidence to support the explanation that traits can be influenced by the environment.

Use evidence to construct an explanation for how the variations in characteristics among individuals of the same species may provide advantages in surviving, finding mates, and reproducing.
Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all.

Construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction.

Ocean Literacy Alignment:
